Netflix Showdown Round 1

In my recent post ranking current Netflix shows, there was a 3-way tie for #10. All three shows were dropping their second season within a month of the post, and that coveted #10 spot would go to the one with the best follow-up season. You and Lost In Space were the first to debut, and therefore, the better of those two would go on to face Altered Carbon when that comes out. So which show won round 1?

WARNING! Consider everything below the picture to be SPOILERS for Lost In Space and You Season 2!

Both Lost In Space and You had good second seasons, but neither was good enough to bump Another Life from the #9 spot. There was, however, a clear winner for the #10 spot, and that is YOU, the viewer, because of the quality content available to watch…just kidding, it’s You, the show.

Lost In Space was fine, I did enjoy it. Unfortunately, Season 1 was much better. I like the family dynamic, but the whole power of family love can get you out of every jam message started to feel repetitive. Every episode revolved around that message. Also, no Robot for most of the season! What the hell. I’m there for the damn robot!

The first episode ended with their ship/boat, hanging off a cliff in the middle of the ocean that was built by some alien species. This was after living on a new planet we never saw, with the promise of living on another new planet by the next episode. Very exciting start! Still, something felt off. They didn’t spend a lot of time showing us the cool, creative planet they lived on, and there was a time limit quickly approaching to get off the planet. It looked like they were either not getting off to the new planet, or not having time to investigate this ocean cliff. A big loss either way. Throughout the rest of the season, they barely touched on any lore or mythology. Mostly it was just a family love fest.

The comparisons with Dexter didn’t stop with the current season of You. Love Quinn gave off a Lumen (Julia Stiles) vibe from the onset. This is not a bad thing though. It’s just a vibe I haven’t had since the final season of Dexter, and welcomed back into my viewing experience. Love not only accepting his murderous ways, but also having her own darkness, was an exciting pleasure to watch. I’m actually sad the season ended with his looking at his neighbor as the next love of his life.

After the first episode of You, I was sure Lost In Space would win the #10 spot. Love seemed too familiar a character. Almost a manic pixie dream girl, spontaneously taking Joe around LA looking for his “perfect bite” before finally cooking for him. Not sure how either of them kept their appetite the whole adventure, but in the end, Love’s roasted chicken was Joe’s perfect bit. The show got better after that, but more importantly, Love became a better, more fully fleshed out character, while all the side characters grew on me much more than the ones from the first season.

So in the end, You claims the #10 spot.

Side Note: A friend introduced me to Sex Education, and I’m halfway through the first season. This show is definitely an addition to the honorable mentions list, but depending on where they go with it, could be a contender for that #10 spot too.
